Concrete

Concrete is an extremely versatile composite of mainly Portland cement, water and aggregate, which has become the most consumed man-made material on Earth.

The Romans first developed concrete by mixing lime and pozzolanic ash to form a mortar. This not only revolutionised the construction of roads, bridges and buildings, but also enabled the creation of complex forms, such as the Pantheon dome, the largest and oldest unreinforced concrete dome in the world.

The Pantheon in Rome is a prime example of Roman concrete construction

That concrete revolution is still continuing. Concrete now comes in a variety of forms, among them ready-mixed, reinforced, pre-cast, high-strength and polymer concrete, as well as glass concrete and air entrained concrete.

Modern concrete applications can create beautiful, flexible and lightweight, firing the imagination of architects and engineers, who can design amazingly intricate structures possessing a strength that belie their delicate appearance.

And, because modern concrete also requires less cement – the creation of which is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions – it is also becoming more environmentally sustainable.

Stockbridge works with architects and engineers, and manages formwork and falsework projects that deliver buildings with beautiful, crafted shapes and finishes. So, if you require a construction contractor in London and the Home Counties that has considerable experience of working with concrete, then get in touch.
